How to Repair a Dead Car Key

Broken Key Loop
One of my MK5 keyfobs has broken off the tiny key loop on top of the loop where it joins the keyfob. It appears to be made of extremely soft metal or plastic. I've drilled the hole and wet-sanded the area to make it stronger. However, I'm sure that's not helping.
I've also attempted to wrap the broken part of the ring using clear tape, but that didn't seem much better. It's a shame because I rely on the small split rings to keep my keys in the right place.
